This is a high authority Site as it is not-for-profit and a .org, it is the website for the Port Arthur Historic site. It contains a lot of information and would be quite useful for a 16yr old who is researching Port Arthur

Snippit from above website

1848 saw the first stone laid for the Separate Prison, the completion of which brought about a shift in punishment philosophy from physical to mental subjugation. Port Arthur also expanded geographically as the convicts pushed further into the encircling hills to extract the valuable timber.

This site is of  rather high authority because they are not for profit and this is their area of specialisation , it is a good site for a 16yr old student doing history on Port Arthur. It contains information about Port Arthur and the penal settlement.

Snippitt of information on the above website

By 1840 over 2000 convicts, soldiers and civil staff lived here. It had become a major industrial settlement, producing ships and shoes, clothing and bells, furniture and worked stone, brooms and bricks. When the probation system was introduced in 1841, many convicts were sent to outstations around the Peninsula to work in timber-getting and agriculture. Port Arthur became a punishment station for serious repeat offenders.

Port Arthur, P 2014 Port Arthur Useful Facts, PDF, accessed 24 May 2014,
I came accross this PDF File and thought that it would be very good for 16yr old rearching Port Arthur. It is of medium authority and contains useful information such as brief history, info about the Isle of the dead and other information about the convicts.

Snippitt of some of the information on the PDF File I found about Port Arthur.

The settlement was established in September 1830 as a timber-getting camp,
producing sawn logs for government projects. After 1833 it became a punishment
station for repeat offenders from the Australian colonies. It also managed a number
of outstations that produced raw material like food and timber.

I found that this Wikipedia page would be very helpful to a 16yr old reaseaching Port Arthur. It is a medium authority site that contains information about Port Arthur and the penal story - about the prison and convicts such as their punishment, along with other information including pictures and links to get futher information.

Snippit of some of the information on Wikipedia "Port Arthur, Tasmania"

Port Arthur was named after George Arthur, the Lieutenant Governor of Van Diemen's Land. The settlement started as a timber station in 1830, but it is best known for being a penal colony.
From 1833, until 1853, it was the destination for the hardest of convicted British criminals, those who were secondary offenders having re-offended after their arrival in Australia. Rebellious personalities from other convict stations were also sent here, a quite undesirable punishment. In addition Port Arthur had some of the strictest security measures of the British penal system.

Twitter Page

Port Arthur Tasmania, PA 2010, Port Arthur Tasmania, Twitter, February 2010, accessed 22 May 2014,
Twitter is a popular social media site, where any one of any age can join and can post things called tweets. It has security where you can protect your tweets and choose to approve or deny follower requests, custimazation options where you can add a profile picture, pin a tweet to your profile and update your name, bio, location, website and theme colour. It also has a help centre as well as a search bar to help you find things. It is a low authority site, however I found it a good place for a person of 16yrs doing research on Port Arthur. Port Arthur has a twitter page that contains pictures and feeds on both Port Arthur and the historic site.

Port Arthur Penitentiary by Tim J Keegan Under License by (CC BY-SA 2.0)

This is a Picture that I sourced from a photo sharing website called Flickr. Althrough Flickr is only of low authority due to only being a .com website, I still found that the picture  I found of the Penitentiary was quite good, as it shows you where all the convicts were put. It would be quite good for a student of 16yrs who is doing an assignment on Port Arthur.

The Penitentiary

Now an imposing ruin, the Penitentiary was constructed in 1843 as a flour mill and granary. In 1857 it was converted into a penitentiary, capable of housing over 480 convicts in dormitory accommodation and separate apartments.

The above is some brief information about the history of the Penitentiary which I sourced from the Port Arthur Historic Site website. The site is of medium authority as it's a .og
It will be very helpful for a student of 16yrs, as it supplies them with some information about the history about the Penitentiary such as when it was built.
